The client’s request

Within many organisations, there is a growing realisation that safety is not just about procedures, rules and technical measures. The way people interact with one another, give feedback and respond to signals from colleagues also has a major impact on safety.

Members of the Safety Culture Club therefore wanted to investigate together how psychological safety is created in the workplace, what role leadership plays in this, and how organisations can create a culture in which employees feel safe to speak up.

Our solution

Four times a year, we bring members together for a Safety Culture Club session focusing on a topical safety issue. This edition focused on psychological safety and leadership. Through an interactive approach, participants explored why people sometimes remain silent rather than speak up, how the reactions of colleagues and managers influence behaviour, and how psychological safety has a direct impact on safe behaviour.

Approach in brief

Not a traditional training session, but learning through experience, sharing, and co-creation. Participants were immersed in the themes of psychological safety and leadership through real-life examples, reflection exercises, thought-provoking statements, interactive Safety Games, and group discussions.

Together, they explored why people sometimes choose to remain silent rather than speak up, how the reactions of colleagues and supervisors influence behaviour, and the role leadership plays in creating a safe and supportive culture.

From Awareness to Insight

Through real-life examples, thought-provoking statements, and group discussions, participants explored why people sometimes choose to remain silent rather than speak up. Along the way, they discovered how strongly the reactions of colleagues and supervisors influence whether employees feel safe to give feedback, ask for help, or share concerns.

Topics covered:
• Speaking up versus staying silent in the workplace
• Giving and receiving feedback
• Responding to mistakes, questions, and concerns
• Leadership and setting a good example
• Trust and collaboration within teams

From insight to action

The session concluded with a co-creative exercise in which participants worked together to develop ideas for further strengthening psychological safety within their organisation.

In addition, all participants were given access to the SHEQ toolkit on mental safety and leadership: a collection of practical tools, activities and visual materials designed to further embed the topic within their teams. This enables them to put the insights gained from the session into practice straight away.
