The Safety Culture Ladder has been developed to encourage a safe attitude, behaviour and leadership. It focuses less on rules and structures. Over the last few years, NEN has taken major strides towards drawing the attention of companies and organisations to the Safety Culture Ladder. Support for this is increasing and it is being used by more and more companies. It’s a great development and something that DENKie strongly believes in and is actively working on.
Through DENKie, we help companies to move from step 2 (legally required) to step 3 (mandatory by 1 January 2024) and beyond.

How important is safety? Who or what is responsible for safe/unsafe working practices? Are there clear rules in place and are these followed? Does management encourage and reward good behaviour? Does management set the right example? How are incidents communicated? Do managers and staff confront each other in a positive way about undesirable behaviour?
Does safety have a prominent place on the strategic calendar? What is the vision? Is safety fully integrated into the management cycle? Are awareness campaigns held regularly? To what extent are investments in safe behaviour seen as making a useful contribution to profit?
Are contractors selected on the basis of their safe behaviour and performance? Is attention given to safety when hiring contractors? How are new employees selected and onboarded? Are safe working practices specifically included in competence profiles? Are employees motivated to do refresher courses/training? Do these also deal with safety issues? Are safety officers professional and competent? Can safety officers address the most senior manager about safety issues?
How aware are people about risks and what is done to optimally promote awareness about safety in the workplace? Is work carried out according to the rules and protocols? Are these tailored to users? Are agreed improvement objectives always followed up after an inspection?
What is the reporting culture like and how are reports dealt with? Is the workplace inspected regularly? Are lessons learnt from incidents? Are changes as a result of incidents actually implemented and evaluated? Is there sufficient communication and is this evaluated?
Are specific audits conducted on safe behaviour? Does the company use statistics to make improvements?
